I make stickers and other items from my drawings, and have been using a Silhouette for 5 years that has just started to show signs of dying, so I'd been eyeing this machine as a replacement. The main feature of this machine that attracted me was the scanner, as currently I have to put my printed stickers on a Silhouette Pixscan mat, scan each end of it because it's too big for my scanner, and stitch the images back together in Photoshop to then import it into the cutting software. It's a pain, but it's currently the best method I have. So, I thought the Scan N Cut would make my process quicker and easier because of the built in scanner.I had watched YouTube videos about the machine and it seemed to have the features and function I needed, so when my Silhouette touch screen started to have issues, I finally pulled the trigger and bought the Scan N Cut.When it arrived, I set it up and the first thing I noticed was while the machine it self seemed fairly solid and decently made, the touch screen felt really cheap. The mechanism to lift, angle and hold it in a position you like is poorly designed at best and if you have the screen in a vertical position it moves when you tap the buttons on the screen. As you tilt the screen there isn't any resistance or feedback to help you know when it's far enough forward that it won't lock when you let go of it, so if you tilt it too far forward and let go it falls down, which probably isn't good for it especially if it happens repeatedly over months/years of owning it.Once I started using the touch screen to set up the machine, I found that the touch points were not mapped correctly to the screen, so I had a difficult time typing anything in during setup because if I tried to type "A" it would put a W on the screen, for example. I ended up having to just tap around on the screen to find the right spot to get the letter I needed, in some cases no where on the button image on the screen would the correct letter type, I had to click in a blank area to get that letter.Next I started setting up the software and familiarizing myself with it. I've been using the Silhouette software for years and while it did have a little bit of a learning curve, it has a lot of features that the Brother software does not appear to have. I did notice that the version of CanvasWorkspace that can be downloaded to your computer does not have all the features that the online version does. I went back and made sure I had the most recent, updated version, and it still did not have all of the features of the online CanvasWorkspace. This alone isn't a deal breaker for me, but really? You can do offsets online but not on the local software?Offset lines is a big part of what I make and really important to me specifically, so for many people this may not be a deterrent from using this machine - but from the video tutorials I had seen, you could create offset lines directly on the machine...but this machine, the one I received, had no such option on the menus. So the only way for me to create an offset would be in the online version of CanvasWorkspace, which kills the usefulness of the machine not needing to be used with a computer at all.It felt like they tried so hard to make this machine independent from a computer that it ended up making it really inconvenient to use it with a computer, as if all of the off the machine features were an afterthought and.... an added expense? I'm still not entirely clear about the "online activation card" and the fact that it was marked as "added value" suggesting that it would normally have to be purchased explicitly for the online activation if you wanted to use this machine with the cloud / your computer. That feature is just built in to the Silhouette. It's meant to be connected to your computer so there's no "extra" step or purchase to connect the two. I'm still not totally clear on this with the Brother machine, if I could not have connected it to my computer without that activation card, but it seemed that way as that was a step in getting it to connect to the wifi. The cut options on the screen of the machine are extremely limited in my opinion, especially if the machine is built to be a stand-alone device. There isn't much you can do on the screen, at least in my experience. I did make sure the firmware on the machine was updated and checked back to see if that increased the options available to me or the versatility and it did not. From a website that sells these activation cards "Connect your Scanncut2 machine to a wireless Network with this scanncut online activation card, Simply purchase this activation card and follow the easy step by step instructions to transfer files from scanncut canvas to your machine via Pc or tablet. One scanncut activation card is needed per Scanncut2 machine" That implicitly makes it seem as though this $50 card is required in order to connect the machine to your computer. The card included with my machine was in a package that stated "value added accessory" which is really funny since you shouldn't have to pay extra to connect a cutting machine to your computer, especially not to access it's full *advertised* range of features.(I did attempt to connect it with a cable.... it did not recognize the connection)Ok so, at this point I can still live with and work around the issues I've found so far. So I get my scanning mat, print a sheet of stickers and make my first attempt at scanning and cutting out some stickers. It is not easy to see on the screen once it scans, but it looks like the scan is terrible. So I look at my sticker sheet and there was a big bubble under it because of how the adhesive on the mat sticks. (I have never had this issue with the Silhouette PixScan mat) So I carefully peel it back up and make sure there are no bubbles, it is perfectly flat. I run it through the machine again to scan it and the scan is still really bad. It is reading dark spots (shadows) where there are none, the sheet is perfectly white with my images outlined in thick black lines. It's never been an issue for the Silhouette software to see the edges of my stickers and trace the cut lines perfectly. I'm not understanding why the Brother cannot get a clean scan, but I do start to notice that the shadows are always in the same spot, around the middle/right side of the cutting mat.I did notice right out of the box that the cutting mat felt really flimsy as compared to the PixScan mat for the Silhouette, and I'm wondering if somewhere in the design of the machine the mat is able to flex as it goes through causing those shadows. There is no way for me to correct this as it's due to the internal structure of the machine... another bad design in this device. So I realize the scanner on this machine - the main reason I purchased it instead of replacing my Silhouette with the newer Cameo - is useless to me. I had considered for a moment whether I could use this machine as a scanner (as large format scanners are in this price range or higher) to scan my PixScan mats instead of the whole two-scan-stitching-together process I'm currently using, but no... even though there is a longer mat sold for this machine it apparently only scans 12x12 which isn't long enough to capture the markings on the PixScan mat and... again, seems like a poor design of this machine. I had originally planned on getting a longer mat so I could place, scan and cut three sheets of sticker paper at once - and now I know that wouldn't have worked, which again cuts the functionality of this machine. In my attempts to just scan my PixScan mat and see how that went, I found that using scan to cut data literally only gives you cut data when saved to Canvas Workspace (online or offline versions) and even when I just tried to scan over the image.... I couldn't save it as anything other than Brother's proprietary cut file format, couldn't save a scan as a JPG or any other format. So I tried to use just the scan feature. It would not allow me to do so without a USB connection. I tried plugging in a flash drive to save the scans to, and it did not recognize the flash drive. I double checked the drive on my computer and it was working fine. I tried a direct USB connection to my computer and that also didn't work. So, there's no functionality to save scanned images as just scanned images because the USB on this machine did not work.I did try really hard to get as clean of a scan from this machine as I could and did a test cut... first, it's hard to see the cut lines on the tiny screen. Especially if you have something on the small side and at all detailed. Even where the scan was clear, this machine could not achieve an accurate cut line (again, solid black outlines on white paper, could not get more clear for an electronic eye). I tried adjusting the extremely simplistic slider that has little to no explanation of how it works to make the cut line recognition better, but of course it made some lines worse and some better, so it was not helpful. I tried both color and grayscale, which again made improvements to some of the cutlines but degraded ones that had already looked okay. I got it to the best look I could possibly find and......told it to cut.On parts of my sheet of stickers, on the tiny touch screen, it had appeared like the cut lines pretty well matched the outline of the stickers. I fully expected the cut lines on the stickers to match what I saw on the screen. It did not. What it cut was not even close to the cut lines on the screen, not even the ones that were clearly on the outer edge of the stickers - those it cut anywhere from 1/16 to 1/8 inch inside where the cut lines showed on the screen. It weirdly rounded off all the shapes (like you'd expect if it had a large internal offset) and did not come anywhere close to cutting a proper sticker.I had used the quick start guide to set up the blade depth and cut pressure... and again, didn't even cut through the top layer of sticker paper. I increased the settings and............still did not cut through the top layer of the sticker paper. To recap,The touch screen adjustable support is really flimsy and feels cheaply made. The touch screen is not mapped correctly to the image on the screen.Using the machine with a computer is complicated and possibly costs more than the machine alone. (this particular listing/model includes the card)The machine doesn't have enough features on the touch screen interface to be used alone and still be what it is advertised to be.The scanner seems incapable of getting a clear scan. The machine struggles to see clear black and white images and determine the cut lines from them. The machine doesn't cut the lines it shows on the screen. The suggested cut settings on the quick start guide are inaccurate or the machine does not cut well.It did not recognize anything plugged into the USB port, and without that you can't simply scan and save an image.Needless to say, this machine has been returned and I will be sticking with my Silhouette. Now, if you are getting this machine to cut their pre-made designs, or cut basic shapes from fabric or paper for quilting or scrapbooking, it could still be an ok machine for you, I didn't test any of that because it's not what I personally needed. But if you want to scan an image and precisely cut out a design from it, I don't recommend this machine.I've had my machine for about 2 weeks now. I did a lot of research and watched a ton of YT videos BEFORE purchasing. I thought I'd be ready by the time I got it. Have read many many reviews and blogs too. Just so you know, until your hands on with the machine it's really hard to get it into your brain how it works and what it really can do. (At least my brain). I'm pretty tech savvy but even for me this is a very steep learning curve. There's things you need to understand1. the machine interface - the options are willy nilly all over the place and so just memorize where things are because it's not intuitive at all and you'll poke endless times trying to find the option you need and go crazy. 2. You need to understand the mechanics, ie blade depth, cut pressure, speed and how to scan correctly, this takes trial and error and getting very familiar with the idiosyncracies of your particular machine. Because it's mechanical as well as electronic the settings for these things are going to be particular to your machine, the guidelines are your starting point and helpful but not the whole story.4. You need to understand what exactly each option does and what it does not do. The manual isn't particularly helpful until you learn the lingo and exactly what you are looking for when you reference the manual, and it misses some details so you'll be searching for answers for sure. The error messages are opaque, just like on your computer but the manual addresses these. The machine does a fantastic job guiding you through some steps if it relates to actual cutting, say if you are foiling or embossing. Otherwise, your on your own. It won't let you cut it draw until you insert the right tool so that's nice for when you forget. (Brother has graciously unlocked those 2 features but you'll still need to purchase the supplies to use them, kind of spendy and embossing is a huge process to get through, I haven't even bothered to try this feature)5. Sign up for, download and learn about Canvas Workspace. It also isn't very intuitive. The best YT videos on this are from Alanda Craft, Julie Fei Fan Balzer is good but she misses some essential details on the technical side of things related to this machine and it's software. Julie is great at demonstrating a project and you'll learn a lot from her. She goes fast though but her videos are short and so a rewind isn't a pain. There are lots of other scan and cut creators and all are helpful.6. The Canvas Workspace has a ton of free projects and very nice ones too, also the brother USA site has lots and lots of free projects and even a very nice editing feature for many of them, these are all drawing files but you can import them to CWS as images and transform them into cutting files from there so if your looking for a nice card to tweak and personalize this is a great place.7. Learn the difference between a draw file and a cut file. Your machine WILL NOT CUT a draw file and vice versa. So remember to save your file as either draw or cut if you don't want to be totally mystified as to why your final project isn't showing up on the cut/draw screen after you've imported it from CWS.8. Use the Canvas Workspace as much as possible to create your file, the machine interface is really too small and limited for creating, it's great for on the fly though. It's REALLY EASY to send your file from CWS to your machine, I love this feature.9. The mats are giving me no problem, I do a test cut first on new material and this saves the mat and my sanity. If a section loses it's stickiness totally I use the Zig glue to restick it and it works fantastic, see YT, I think Papered chef and Jen Blausey have really good videos. If I need more stick I just tape down the material, no big deal, just don't interfere with the rollers, you don't want to get your tapetangled up in the machine and mat registration marks have to be clear on order for the machine to read correctly. It's okay to tape over the rulers. I clean my mat with an alcohol free baby wipe.I really like my machine, I think it's very versatile and does a great job of cutting and drawing and I'm very excited about all of the possibilities a cutting machine offers and think I made the right choice to buy a Brother. I'm not a stamper and don't want to mess with dies or the expense of them. I called customer service yesterday with a question, got through in a reasonable amount of time and found CS to be friendly and responsive and very helpful. The scanning feature is wonderful so learn how to use it correctly, again a ton of videos on how to get the best results. I docked 1 star overall because this is a very intensive learning curve and I think Brother could do a better job with more detail in the manual. I printed out the manual and you need a printed manual for quick reference but this manual needs to be updated with the new updated features they've added since. Also I think a printed manual should be included because it's essential to have one, I didn't like at all having to print my own. I have 3 stars for ease of use but that's because of needing to learn so very much, 4 stars for the mat adhesion and 5 stars for versatility. As for my purchase experience, it was pretty rocky. The 1st machine I received had been used and the packaging was all messed up in the box and things were missing and the mat very used. So check your packaging very carefully and expect nothing less than brand new pristine. People return these things and the boxes are not always checked for damage or use. I was pretty mad because the delay put me way behind schedule and I was mortified at the condition of what I received, I'm not used to receiving things this way from Amazon, I use Amazon A LOT. The 2nd one I received is absolutely perfect and I'm very happy with Amazon's quick response in fixing it. I hope this review helps others, this is a great machine and they've even dropped the price 20.00 since I purchased it. The only drawback I can see is that we may not get all the updates going forward as they have newer (more expensive) models now and updates on older models are always eventually phased out so that's not a surprise. But it does all I need it to do but updates should factor into your decision on whether or not to purchase this model (CM350). If you go with a newer model my points still apply, I don't see any really difference in the newer models except higher scanning resolution, auto blade and increase of cut depth from 2mm to 3mm and quieter. All great new features but not a deal breaker for me. The new machines got the paper piercing and offset lines features added recently too, sad I didn't get those but I oh well. As for quietness, I don't find this machine to be noisy at all. Happy cutting! (You'll be walking around with tape on your feet a lot) ?I had the first Scan n Cut [CM100] from several years ago and used it quite a bit. I was absolutely amazed when I plugged in this new one and had it set up and going in just a couple of minutes. So many features have been refined and so many added. This is truly an automatic blade; you don't tell it what you're putting on the mat, it "feels" around and adjusts according to its measurements. I've cut some pretty tough chipboard as well as some delicate vinyl and it did a great job making the adjustments that I'd become accustomed to setting manually on the older model. This one is also nice and quiet. Not silent, of course, but it is quiet. This model has a smaller screen than the other DX models but that's perfectly fine if you have a computer or tablet.I was on the fence to buy a new cutting machine, as I git burned with a different brand in the past. But this thing does it all, and it is easy to use and it cuts so well. I never liked cutting vinyl or paper in the past, and just used it for what I needed. But this bugger is amazing.I see me doing SO SO SO much with it in the future. So far I have made Quilting stencils, and paper crafts, and car window stickers.I love that it scans too. Helps SOOOOO much with making stencilsI bought this to cut my stamped images for card making. It's, honestly, the best crafting purchase I've ever made. It's opened up a whole new world of cards, stickers, & perfect placement. My only gripe would be that the it's not as easy to use my already purchased svg files. I do have another machine/software that I can use, but I'd rather use the Scan 'n Cut because of the autoblade. It is a very useful tool with endless possibilities mats and blades are expensive and holders don't come with blades something I wish I new when I bought the cheaper oneWas a good price and arrived fast. First two sheets of paper scanned great and the cut outs were great. After that could not get the paper to load properly. Kept going in crooked. Went online and found others were having the same problem. No matter what we tried we could not get the paper to load. Thought this was going to be a great machine, turned out to be garbage. Packed it up and sent it back. Neta.Once I figured out to activate and connect everything, it did exactly what I purchased it for. Cuts any design that I want. I found many images online and just sent them to the cutter and voila, perfect stencil every time! It's a little pricey for the machine and supplies, but just what I have been looking for!I bought this with the intent of using with my stamp collection. Wish I had purchased years ago! Easy to use and works well. Not full stars as the mat is very poor and the stickiness was gone after a couple of uses. There are ways to resolve this without buying a new one but this is definitely an area for great improvement. The machine will cut out great, when you get it to scan the area you want to cut. It works best on very simple high contrast items. The mat, TERRIBLE!!!!!! Cannot stress enough how horrible the mat is for this machine. The tackiness does not last at all and then the material slides around on it. Due to this I am giving this machine a low rating.
